Overview — What is Birmingham Hip Resurfacing?

Hip resurfacing has been in use worldwide since 1997, and the US Food and Drug Administration reviewed a tremendous amount of resulting clinical data before approving it for use in this country in 2006. Dr. Stewart has been performing Birmingham hip resurfacings since 2007, totaling nearly two decades of experience.

Unlike a total hip replacement, which requires the removal of the femoral head and the insertion of a hip stem down the shaft of the femur, hip resurfacing preserves the femoral head and the femoral neck. During the procedure, Dr. Stewart removes only a few centimeters of bone around the femoral head, shaping it to fit tightly inside the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing implant. This bone conserving approach may be particularly valuable for younger, more active patients who may outlive a traditional hip replacement and face a revision surgery later in life.

A clinical study showed the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing implant had a survivorship of 98.4% at the five year mark, which is comparable with the survivorship of a traditional total hip replacement in the under-60 age group.

Conditions That May Indicate the Need for Resurfacing:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Developmental dysplasia of the hip
  • Avascular necrosis

Dr. Stewart will determine whether or not you are a good candidate for the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing.

Candidacy — Who Is a Good Candidate?

Hip resurfacing is intended for young, active adults who are under 60 years of age most being under 50 years of age and in need of a hip replacement. Adults over 60 who are living non-sedentary lifestyles may also be considered for this procedure, however, this can only be further determined by a review of your bone quality. Dr. Stewart will review your imaging and health history to determine candidacy.

Recovery Timeline

Day of Surgery
Walking with assistance
Most patients are walking with assistance on the day of surgery and discharged within 1 to 2 days.
Week 1 to 6
Protected weight bearing
During the first year, more conservative low impact activities like walking, swimming, and bicycling are recommended for strengthening the femoral neck and the muscles around the resurfaced joint.
Month 6
Functional recovery
Most patients have returned to low and moderate impact activities including cycling, swimming, and light recreational activity.
Year 1 and beyond
Return to high impact activity
Most surgeons will tell you that after the first year, you can return to whatever physical activity you enjoyed before hip pain limited your mobility. Unlike total hip replacement, patients are often able to return to jogging or singles tennis, unlimited running, tennis, or other sports after the first year following surgery.

Frequently Asked Questions

A total hip replacement requires the removal of the femoral head and the insertion of a stem down the shaft of the femur. Hip resurfacing, on the other hand, preserves the femoral head and the femoral neck. Dr. Stewart removes only a few centimeters of bone around the femoral head, shaping it to fit inside the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing implant. This may make for future revision surgery simpler if it ever becomes necessary.
Dr. Stewart will use an incision of between six and eight inches in length. While some surgeons may use patients can have a slightly smaller incision, most will fall in that range.
It is impossible to say exactly how long your implant will last because so many factors play into the lifespan of an implant. The metal on metal bearing surfaces of the resurfacing implant may extend its life longer than that of a traditional total hip replacement, but failure to comply with your physical rehabilitation program may cause the implant to fail earlier. A clinical study showed the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing implant had a survivorship of 98.4% at the five year mark.
Coverage varies by plan. Hip resurfacing is covered under many insurance plans when medical necessity is established. Our team will verify your benefits prior to scheduling.
