Physical Therapy
A personalized, non-surgical approach to reducing hip and knee pain, rebuilding strength, and restoring your ability to move and live without limitation.
Overview - What is Physical Therapy for Hip and Knee Conditions?
Physical therapy is one of the most effective and widely recommended non-surgical treatments for hip and knee pain. A personalized program developed in coordination with Dr. Stewart's care team focuses on strengthening the muscles around the joint, improving range of motion, correcting movement patterns, and reducing pain through guided exercise and hands on techniques.
For patients who have undergone hip arthroscopy, Dr. Stewart recommends beginning outpatient physical therapy the day after surgery, attending therapy 2 to 3 times per week for several weeks following the procedure. Physical therapy is also an important component of recovery following direct anterior hip replacement, bilateral hip arthroplasty, and Mako knee procedures. For patients preparing for surgery, a pre-operative strengthening program can help improve postoperative outcomes.
Candidacy - Who Can Benefit?
Physical therapy may be appropriate if you have:
- Hip or knee pain related to arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, or mechanical imbalance
- Pain that is limiting your daily activities, exercise, or quality of life
- A desire to explore conservative treatment before considering surgery
- Recently undergone hip or knee surgery and are in the recovery phase
- Weakness, stiffness, or instability in the hip or knee affecting your movement
What to Expect
Physical therapy programs are individualized based on your diagnosis, goals, and current level of function. A licensed physical therapist will evaluate your movement, strength, flexibility, and gait to identify the areas most contributing to your pain or limitation.
Your program will typically include a combination of therapeutic exercises, manual therapy techniques, neuromuscular re-education, and home exercise programming. Progress is monitored regularly and the program evolves as your strength and function improve.
