Overview - What is PRP Therapy?
Over the past several years, the utilization of platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections has increased in the field of orthopedics for the treatment of tendon injuries. Platelet rich plasma injections are made from the patient's own blood. Platelets secrete growth factors and facilitate the healing of damaged cells. It is for this reason that PRP injections are created from highly concentrated levels of platelets, to accelerate the healing process.
PRP injections are used for the treatment of abductor tendonitis, abductor tendon tears, and chronic hip and knee pain. Tendons have a slow metabolic rate, and many lifestyle factors can inhibit a tendon's ability to repair itself, including smoking, excess caffeine, low protein consumption, and poor sleep hygiene. Medical conditions such as low levels of vitamin D, hyperparathyroidism, and other hormonal and metabolic issues can also negatively impact tendon health. Additionally, the use of antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin and Levaquin can contribute to tendon issues months or even years after taking these medications. PRP injections have been found to be effective in some cases at treating these issues by helping to accelerate the healing process of damaged or injured tendons.
Candidacy - Who Is a Good Candidate?
PRP therapy may be appropriate if you have:
- Abductor tendonitis or abductor tendon tears
- Early to moderate hip or knee arthritis not yet requiring surgery
- Chronic tendon or ligament injuries that have not responded to rest and physical therapy
- Hip or knee pain affecting daily activity and quality of life
- A preference for non-surgical treatment before considering more invasive options
What to Expect on the Day of the Procedure
PRP injections are performed in the clinic on Friday afternoons by Adam Burmeister, physician assistant for Dr. Stewart. Approximately 30 to 60 cc of blood is drawn from the patient's arm and placed in a centrifuge machine, which spins the blood down to yield a sample of platelet-rich plasma. The centrifuge process takes approximately 20 minutes. The platelet-rich sample is then injected directly into the damaged or injured tendon or joint to promote healing and repair. Patients are able to drive themselves home following the procedure.
After the injection it is common to experience mild discomfort or swelling at the injection site, which may last a few days. Tylenol may be used as needed. Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, Aleve, or aspirin should be avoided for 4-6 weeks following an injection and 1 week prior, as they interfere with platelet function and may lessen your response to the PRP injection.
